Provincial Agriculture Minister and focal person for the Left Bank, Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mahar, made an emergency visit to Guddu Barrage and the K.K. Bund and held an important meeting with officials. The meeting was attended by District Council Chairman Bangal Khan Mahar, Ex Sindh Assembly Member Shahryar Shar, Deputy Commissioner, and officials from other relevant departments. The Agriculture Minister received a briefing on the current situation at Guddu Barrage and reviewed the arrangements there.
Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department at Guddu Barrage, Javed Ahmed Chachar, briefing the meeting, said that today8217;s water surge is reaching Panjnad, which will reach Guddu Barrage in two days. Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mahar said that there is currently no dangerous situation, however, a flood surge of 700,000 cusecs is expected. Our preparations are in the context of 900,000 cusecs; if such a surge comes, it would be a super flood. He further stated that the K.K. Bund is sensitive, where work is ongoing on an emergency basis; however, there is currently no threat to the Shank Loop Bund. Estimates of potential losses to agriculture have also been prepared.
The Agriculture Minister stated that on the orders of President Asif Ali Zardari, Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and the Chief Minister of Sindh, we are here to assess the potential flood and water situation. The staff of the Irrigation Department is present at the barrages 24 hours a day, and the barrages are very strong, which will allow the potential floodwater to pass through easily. He informed that the water from the rains and the three rivers released from India will reach Guddu Barrage by September 7 after passing through Panjnad. The Sindh government, Pakistan Army, Navy, and all institutions are together in relief efforts. Medical camps and relief camps have also been set up for the public.
The Agriculture Minister said that the water situation is fully under control and the Sindh government8217;s preparations are complete. The party leadership and the Chief Minister of Sindh have been monitoring the situation from the beginning, while ministers are also engaged in monitoring.
